The Impact of "Ocean with David Attenborough"
Monday, 18 May, 2026
A year after its release, Ocean with David Attenborough is more than just a documentary. It brought the reality of industrial exploitation at sea into millions of homes and sparked global conversations about protecting our oceans.
The film is now one of National Geographic’s most-watched documentaries. It reached millions of people worldwide and helped inspire more calls for stronger marine protection.
We are proud that Sea Shepherd supported the Antarctica sequences by providing logistics and access to some of the most remote waters on earth. On board the Allankay, our crew helped filmmakers capture krill trawlers working near feeding whales in the Southern Ocean.
“Powerful images of super trawlers ploughing through feeding whales in pursuit of the same krill demonstrated to retailers that removing the foundation of Antarctica’s food web is unsustainable.”

In the past year, the film has influenced discussions about marine protection, harmful fishing practices, and the movement to reduce the use of krill-based products.
This is why documenting these issues is so important. Images can raise public awareness, influence leaders, and help create real change.

"Sea Shepherd provided essential logistical support and access to these remote waters that would otherwise have been inaccessible or prohibitively difficult to reach."
